It has shown that our emotions, decisions, and behaviors depend on others \u2014 that the brain is not an isolated organ.\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-62feed9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"62feed9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThis revolution is real. But it may have identified sociality somewhat late in the human experience.\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8bed901 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8bed901\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBecause in most classical models, sociality emerges when the brain engages in elaborate forms of interaction: understanding others, interpreting intentions, communicating, cooperating, sharing complex emotions. Empathy, theory of mind, attachment, social cognition: all these processes are now well documented.\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9f2edc5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9f2edc5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBut this way of framing the problem could leave something in the shadows.\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-337333b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"337333b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBecause even before interaction, even before communication, sometimes even before any explicit relationship, the brain already seems sensitive to the presence of others.\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-25b631c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"25b631c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThis idea leads to a surprising question:\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aafd6b1 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"aafd6b1\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3afcf49 animated-slow elementor-invisible elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3afcf49\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_animation&quot;:&quot;fadeInDown&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How could such an ancient, robust and reproducible phenomenon as social facilitation have remained relatively peripheral in our way of thinking about the social brain?\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-228efac e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"228efac\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-492693d e-con-full animated-slow e-flex elementor-invisible e-con e-child\" data-id=\"492693d\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;,&quot;animation&quot;:&quot;fadeInLeft&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2fbe9a4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2fbe9a4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For more than a century, research on social facilitation has shown that the mere presence of others can already modify attention, vigilance, effort, and performance on a wide variety of tasks.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8021c85 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"8021c85\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-11e9106 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"11e9106\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>And yet, this phenomenon has often remained on the periphery of major theoretical models of social cognition \u2014 as if the question of presence were merely a contextual phenomenon.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7a2db98 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"7a2db98\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-185803f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"185803f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Presence Brain project does not challenge the Social Brain. It is a direct extension of it. But it explores another possibility. It denotes something more fundamental: the fact that another potentially relevant organism is there\u2014or could be, with varying degrees of certainty. Before the relationship, before the interaction, even before speech: there is presence.
