ATTENTION

Why is it sometimes so difficult to stay focused?

Your child starts an activity and then quickly moves on to something else. You read a page and suddenly realize your mind is elsewhere.
You struggle to complete certain tasks despite your motivation. Or, conversely, you can remain absorbed for hours in an activity that you are passionate about.

Understanding Attention

At every moment, our brain receives a considerable amount of information.
It cannot process it all simultaneously.
Attention acts as a selection system that allows us to prioritize certain information and ignore other information.
Neuroscience distinguishes several forms of attention:

Sustained attention

Maintaining concentration over time.

Selective attention

Resisting distractions to remain focused on a task.

Attentional control

Deliberately directing attention toward what is important.

Dividing attention

Distributing resources among several sources of information.

These mechanisms work together to enable learning, memory, problem-solving, and adaptation to new situations.

What neuroscience teaches us

Attention and presence

These phenomena have been studied for over a century in social facilitation research.

They show that the mere presence of others can alter the way the brain allocates its cognitive resources.

Attention thus appears as one of the main mechanisms by which the presence of others influences our behavior.

This idea is at the heart of the Presence Brain project, which explores how social contexts modify brain function, from attention to the neural networks that support cognition.

When to consult a doctor?

How I work

Neuropsychological assessment allows for a better understanding of attentional functioning and the factors that influence the observed difficulties.
It is about understanding how the person mobilizes their attention in their daily life, at school, at work and in their relationships with others.
